Seosan is a hidden gem. What definitely made me interested in visiting was the Ganworam Hermitage site, but the more I looked into the city, the more interested I was. Ganworam continued to be my favorite place of the trip, with the ecological wonders around, and the hermitage that twice a day becomes an islet. I found myself there for a lot more hours than I had intended because of the peaceful nature of the place. Even the cold wind could not distract from it.
A close second was the walled city of Haemieupseong. Rich with not only the beautiful nature but also the history lessons, I was there for a whole day. The place is very foreigner-friendly, with the majority of the signs and explanations being in English as well as Korean. There were also leaflets in the office in front with detailed explanations in both languages (as well as other languages). I enjoyed noting the differences between building styles (like the difference between what a commoner house would look like versus a merchant versus a government official), but there were people having picnics, and you can take archery lessons at the site too. It"s also really easy to get to, which is a plus.
Another highlight is the Jungang Lake Park (중앙호수공원). At night, it"s a sight to behold with colorful lights, but personally I enjoyed it even more during the day. There"s a pavilion in an islet in the middle of the lake, where you can sit and watch the ducklings swim around.
The people of Seosan were warm and friendly, and the food was delicious, especially around the Samgilpohang Port, which is worth a trip alone for the food, but it also gives a beautiful marine view.
